1995

Israel goes solo. He records the acoustic "Like the Country," of which Craig Vanderah of CAKE Magazine, says "Dan Israel's songs are deserving of label attention". He follows this up with an electrified EP, "Some Songs and packs up and heads home to the land of 10,000 lakes.

1992

Israel seeks the warmer climate of Austin, Texas, forming the (as the Austin Chronicle would later call it) "ampheta-folk" band Potter'sField. The band releases an independent CD, "Esperanto", which garners tremendous critical praise and widespread radio play, and nets the band a significant live audience in the process. Potter's Field goes on to tour the Upper Midwest several times, and before calling it quits in late 1995, records "Live at the Outhouse" as the band's swan song.

In 1995 Israel is named one of the Top 15 Songwriters in Austin in the annual Austin Music Awards poll, joining such luminaries as Danial Johnston, Jimmy Vaughn, Butch Hancock, and Alejandro Escovedo.

1989

Israel begins performing solo acoustic shows on the streets of Chicago, New York, Boston, and San Francisco. Finding it warmer indoors, he starts to play at numerous Chicago-area coffeehouses. Hooking up with fellow songwriter Brad Bouten, the two troubadors form One Town Horse, and move up into the Chicago club scene, opening for such notables as the Drovers and Rev. Horton Heat, hitting such famed nightspots as the Lounge Ax, Cabaret Metro, and the Cubby Bear. Pressing their first two demos, the duo lands airplay on Chicago-area stations WCBR and WNUR, and gains a sizeable following in Chicago.

Writing about the One Horse Town demo, CAKE's Deneen Gannon wrote "For this acoustic lover who spends lots of time at First Avenue and the Uptown, this demo is like water in the desert."

1986

Dan Israel joins his first band, the Big Madras. The Madras' bass player is Dave Paul, who will go on to punk-rock fame as a member of the legendary AmRep Records band Guzzard. Israel wows (and slightly frightens) an audience at a mall in Plymouth, Minnesota, with his stunning Johnny Rotten impression on the Madras' version of the Sex Pistols' "Anarchy in the UK."
